Some Additional Thoughts about Power

Hi folks,

I really enjoyed our discussion on power and oppression in class on Thursday.  I hope you did too.  It made me think about a lot of things that are taking place today in the world.  I think about our conversation about the five faces of oppression and some of your questions about whether Jews face the all five forms of oppression as a group.  I would argue that if you belong to the minority group n the United States then you may face the various forms of oppression.  I thought about this because of the video that I watched of the police officers beating the orthodox Jew in his own synagogue.  Can you imagine getting beat up in your Church or place of worship?  But to me, this speaks to the various forms of oppression that Jews face.  What do you think?
Remember, power is one of the basic tenets of society.  It is used daily on the micro, meso, and macro levels and is built into the social structure and social institutions.  This chapter discusses the various ways that power works in our society.  You have an opportunity to use the political power you possess through voting if you are able to do so.
So many of you have done some incredible work on your blog.  I want to reward the best ones.  You will receive a link on Blackboard to vote for the best blog this week.  This is an extra credit assignment.  I selected the best three blog entries for the week.  I want you to vote on the best one using the link that is found in the announcement section of Blackboard.  After you read each blog, you must write about the blog you liked and the reasons why on my blog. You will only get credit if you both vote and write a comment on my blog.  Your comment must explain why you like the blog and how the blog relates to our unit on power, the reading and the video.  This must be done by Friday at 11:59 PM to receive credit.  Good luck!

  2. I Bogdan Petcu....really liked Mariama's blog, because in her last entry we share almost the same thoughts about it. Speaking about on the same matters and sharing a similar life experience.

  4. I like Latisha’s blog because of the way she explains both the article and the experiment to define “power over” or “power to” discussed in chapter 5. Also, I like the fact that when explaining or defining both types of power using examples from the experiment and the article, she gives her point of view about the militant experiment and the article. “Marginalization has made me oppressed because I always feel like certain things are going to always be out of my reach. Even as a black woman I feel marginalized when it comes to my own race. Black women are portrayed as angry and many people will be hesitant of dating one. This ends up making me feel powerless because I feel like there will be this hate surrounding me when I enter certain social situations.” Another interesting thing that I think she did was the very fact that she paraphrased and summarized what she has read. I think she did a great job on the blog because she related everything she has learned from the chapter, the article and from the experiment because she connected everything back to what we have been talking about in class. In other words, what she wrote about clearly relates to power. Another great thing I think she did in her blog was to explain the type of power or strategy of power being used in the experiment and the article. Overall she did great and her blog entry shows that she understood the chapter.

  5. I personally liked Sarah Lee's blog entry on the Milgrim Experiment. I liked how she used her brother as an example of how a certain group of people can be oppressed in something as normal such as voting for the next presidential candidate. She also compared having power and unknowingly oppressing others when she mentioned the student's being convinced by the doctor saying that 450 volts won't be harmful to the person on the other side receiving the volts.

  6. First of all, Sorry Professor. I did not know that you have set a time to post and vote. I know! Second, I think we all did a great job writing our blogs. I like that Marcel applied it to herself very efficiently, Rebekah did a great job talking about the importance of knowledge when it comes to power. Carla was simple and straight forward, Tina was very creative and detailed, william did a great job connecting the points, and applying them, and last but not least I did a great job on it, and I learned a lot. Hence, since it will not look right to vote for myself, the one that I found the most organized and well done was William's one. Even so, every point of view is really valuable, our good differences are what make our interesting diversity and more.
